Gemstones, Jewels and... Coffee?
Well it was thanks to a couple of ‘India for hipster’ blogs, found via a quick google search (yes, I’m not embarassed to admit these things), that caused me to locate a seriously decent coffee place in Jaipur’s C-Scheme: Curious Life Coffee Roasters. While living in Jaipur for a short stint in 2017, this spot soon became my favourite place to hang, drink surprisingly good cappuccinos and do work-kinda things (edit photos, write blogs, plan workshops etc). I think what I most liked about spending time at Curious Life was, alongside their smoothie bowls, chocolate chip cookies and fresh roasted beans, I was captivated by the other people that visited the cafe. With the exception of a few other tourists, this place seemed to attract all of Jaipur’s interesting, beautifully dressed, charismatic local professionals. I liked the vibe. I liked to pretend I was part of the vibe.
It was during one visit that I ended up sharing a table with a stranger, a sharply dressed man wearing an incredible ruby ring. We made space, he introduced himself as Akshat, and we shared some conversation, during which he mentioned he worked within Jaipur’s jewelery industry. Mostly we spoke about many other things though, yoga retreats in Bali I believe, and Indian Miniature Painting… my kind of topics. It wasn’t until a few months and many cappuccinos later that, when my parents came out to visit me, I thought to message Akshat and ask if he knew where I could take my mother on her magpie hunt for shimmering gemstones. And I’m so glad I asked… because without that incentive, I may never have stumbled upon his beautiful high-end company that is Tallin Jewels.
Tallin Jewels is a family company that Akshat Ghiya directs, specialising in selective fine jewelry all hand-made in Jaipur. The designs are traditional, elegant and captivating with a fresh modern touch so that each piece is individual and stand-alone. Quality is prioritised meaning the finest gems are sourced and the upmost care taken during production. Akshat and his family have worked with their employees for decades, looking after their staff and living out their ethical values within every part of the company. Although he was busy with work, Akshat made time to generously offer me a tour of the factory, which incorporates production for both Tallin Jewels as well as Adi Handmade; a jewelery company set up by Akshat’s equally talented sister, Aditi Ghiya.
Aditi says that Jaipur, at the heart of Rajasthan, is her source of magic and inspiration. Adi Handmade is her blend of how traditional unique handmade design and production techniques can meet elegance and simplicity, symmetry and sacred geometry. Her designs bring old and new cultures togther, tending to naturally appeal to a western eye while still referencing the talent of local craftsmen and the roots of Jaipuri art. I was enthralled by the designs, vision, ethics and products of both Tallin Jewels and Adi Handmade, and have since made multiple personal purchases from both designers. In fact, as I type this now my hands are wearing rings from both Tallin Jewels and Adi Handmade.
During our INSPIRED INDIA creative travel trip in September 2018, I definitely wanted to involve Akshat and Aditi and share their creative and inspired visions with our guests. Once again they kindly opened their factory in the heart of Jaipur and gave us a guided tour, with lots of insights into the complete jewelery production process. Always a pleasure to spend time with the Ghiya family, and our guests still talk about their elegant pieces and the unique experience of the personal demonstration that we received.
