The ancient art practice of Indian Miniature Painting is as poetic as it is descriptive, a vibrant world of symbolism and narrative, original composition, handmade materials and minute detail.
In this workshop we’ll be introducing and discussing the qualities of Indian Miniature Painting and the traditional techniques and materials that are still used today. This will be an experiential class where you'll get to try using authentic materials from Jaipur City Palace studio (India), including handmade brushes, mineral paints in sipi shells and raw gum arabic. We'll talk about what comprises the art-from, how meditation is at its foundation, and you'll try practicing Indian line and design work and meditative techniques yourself.
The effort that is required to paint finely and produce the image becomes a concentration exercise, meaning the art becomes a painting meditation when practiced consistently. As you work to steady your focus, the thoughts begin to drop away and in those moments of calmness you are simply yourself. The stillness then begins to feed back into the brush strokes, and the artist becomes more connected to the painting -each stroke is an extension of yourself. Over time, the elegance of the final images comes from a deeply rooted elegance of character. Come join us to experience the beauty of this practice and how the teachings of yoga can be found within multiple disciplines
